WHO HAS THE AUTHORITY?
Dear Truth Seeker,
There is a pattern running through Scripture and history: God leads people from darkness into light.
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus did not understand everything at once. They came to Jesus cautiously—even secretly. But as light increased, so did conviction. When the cross came, the hidden disciples stepped into the light and openly took their stand.
Centuries later, during an age when Scripture had been obscured by human tradition and ecclesiastical authority, the Reformers faced a similar journey. They opened the Bible and began rediscovering truths that had been buried beneath centuries of tradition. They did not recover everything at once. One generation advanced upon the light received by another.
Truth was progressive—not because truth changed, but because people were progressively discovering truth that had always been there.
And what about us?
We inherited Christianity through centuries of history. Along the way, truth and error became intertwined. Sincere followers of Jesus can be found in many churches and systems, faithfully living according to the light they have. God knows them as His own.
That makes the words of Revelation especially striking:
“Come out of her, my people…”
Revelation 18:4 KJV
Notice what Jesus calls them: “My people.”
He does not abandon His people because they are surrounded by error. He calls them into greater light.
And that brings the story to us.
The great controversy has always involved the same fundamental questions: Whose word will we trust? Who has authority? Who determines truth?
God’s Word or man’s word?
God’s law or man’s law?
God’s appointed day—or a day established by human authority?
History records that a change occurred. Churches themselves have written about it. Original documents still exist. And Revelation tells us that worship, obedience and authority will once again become issues of enormous consequence before Christ returns.
So perhaps the Reformation was never merely something to study.
Perhaps it is something we are being asked to continue.
What happens when greater light challenges something we have always believed?
Joseph and Nicodemus eventually had to decide.
The Reformers had to decide.
And so will we.
Don’t take our word for it.
Open your Bible. Examine the documents. Follow the evidence. Pray for understanding.
THE REFORMATION BEGAN.
WHO SAID IT WAS FINISHED?
Keep digging.
